The Story of Chris & Fuana
At the age of 15, I began an apprenticeship with master drummer Titos Sompa from the Congo. 5 years later I found myself in the Congo and then in Zimbabwe where I had followed the sounds of the Mbira, a 29 keyed thumb piano sacred to the Shona people.
After 10 years of playing Mbira and drumming at ceremonies with the masters, I was called into some very unique initiations that transformed me into a spirit medium and ceremony maker. What was initially a musical journey, became something steeped in the Shona peoples ancient medicines and spirit traditions; territory no foreigner had traversed before.
The elders where I was initiated gifted me with a mountain to carry out ceremonies and healing practices, which is still in use today. I also became the first foreigner bestowed with the sacred stewardship of ‘Matare’ a Medicine that allows one to have direct conversation with their ancestors.
In 2008 I underwent further Sangoma training and initiations in South Africa. It was shortly after this that I began working with my 11,000 year old European ancestor, Fuana (otherwise known as Grandfather Ha-Ha). This journey, channeling the wisdom of Fuana and sharing it with others, as well as inspiring ecstatic dance with my musical compositions, have contributed to some of the most profound moments of my life.
